Artist Profile of Bhavni Bhakoo
Bhavni Bhakoo was born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya and is of East Indian descent. She has an extensive knowledge of the arts in Canada and around the world and brings a multi-cultural and lingual dimension to her work. Bhavni studied film at the Toronto Film School and visual arts at the University of Manitoba, School of Fine Art earning a BFA (Honours, Double Gold Medalist) degree. Her knowledge includes watercolours, acrylics, mixed media, film, and video. Bhavni’s film ‘Ektha’ was nominated in 5 out of 8 categories including Best Film and Best Director at the Toronto Film School Student Festival in 2008. The film won the award for Best Cinematography.
Bhavni lives in Winnipeg focusing on painting, ceramics and film. She also spent a few years in Lamu, a historic landmark in the Indian Ocean embracing a community of global artists, where she painted and created much art. Her passion for travel and continuously researching her own and other cultures, is an inherent source for her creativity. Bhavni is also a prolific writer and a poet.
